About my initial Americamp application

Hey Guys!

So I figured that I wanted start this blog to inform people about my Americamp experience! I have felt that reading blogs has been amazing to grasp a feel of what the application process is like and also the demands of camp! I will be writing allllll the way from why I chose Americamp right until I (hopefully) go over in 2017.

First things first, I'm going to explain how I found Americamp and my initial application I started in 2015.

So, I found out about Americamp way back in February 2015. I tweeted something about wanting to do Camp America, unknowing that there were various other companies.

The first tweet aww.

I already had a holiday booked for July to Turkey with my friends, and also ended up going on "holiday" in June to Tunisia, so it would be too late to go to the states😒.
I kind of dismissed the idea for a few months until I went to my friends leaving party! She was going to a camp in Boston, and then travelling for a month (she also went with Americamp). It was then that I realised, maybe this is actually something I want to do! I was up for the challenge after such a tough year and I wanted something new and something to look forward to.

The last 2 weeks of August came, I decided to decline my uni offers for performing arts, had an epiphany to return to Sixth Form to complete the whole of A-Level Psychology in a year (crazy i know😩), so why not just go ahead and make an Americamp account.

I didn't think anything would really come of it - especially as quick as it did. I had almost finished the application form by the back end of September (which is really simple and easy to follow, I will make another post next about what the application form is like and the Interview). Somebody then rang me from Americamp whilst I was in sixth form - I'm pretty sure her name was Billie. She was soo lovely and easy to chat to, she was asking me about my skills (dance, drama and circus acrobatics) and also my dates in which I could go to camp.

Safe to say I did not expect that a few more phone calls later and within a few hours I would have my interview sorted! (Another note to mention, I don't know about you guys but I HATE ringing up and speaking to people, even at the age of 19! It takes me about 3 hours to dial the number, and another half hour to press call! But with Americamp, I feel I am just able to call straight away as they are so approachable and friendly. Reason 145 why to choose Americamp).

I would be having my interview the next day with my friend Katy who did Americamp that year and had just returned. It was lovely as I had known Katy for about 7 years so it was kind of a relief I was having my interview with her - although I was nervous (I will also explain my interview in my next post).

So, I passed my interview yay!💃🏼

This was the time I had been dreading. I had to complete the application video. Oh my God, technology is NOT my thing. I made the most awful, cringeworthy video, it felt soo fake and I was stuttering like mad😩😷. My top video editing skills shone through and I had reverted back to my 12 year old self with the windows movie maker💪🏼 not exactly great when I had watched countless other application videos on YouTube and they were like bloody film producers!

About 2 weeks later, I was transited which seemed so scary!

Two weeks later, I received an email from Camp Lindenmere who wanted to have a skype interview with me - they were interested in my trapeze skills.

Okay, so I put down circus acrobatics - specifically trapeze as a main skill - for one because the Americamp team said the skill made me stand out, so why wouldn't I put it as a top skill?

I only had one weeks worth of intense training on a trapeze bar and silks in Sixth Form, however, I enjoyed it a lot and was willing to go for extra training. The lady from the camp asked me if I could get in touch with the trapeze artist to see if I could have extra training as I wouldn't be able to make the camp training as my A2 exams finished on 15th June. It turned out it would just end up mega expensive to have extra trapeze training up until camp so I had to email explaining the situation.

Now I know it was totally stupid of me not to think about this sooner. So note to you guys, think really hard about your top 3 skills! As I was in transit, my application couldn't be changed and I was in a little bit of a pickle. Nevertheless, I still had the camp fair in Leeds in January and I could choose which camps I wanted to speak to.

January came and I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified (but also excited) at all the life changes that were going to be happening in 2016, moving house, America and Uni (my epiphany seemed to be a fab one, as I got an unconditional to study Psychology at Northumbria Uni). Also, I had gone through such a traumatic event in Tunisia the previous year (the beach attack on 26th June in Sousse). But that is a different story.

I swear I could create a novel called "Jade's Series Of Unfortunate Events 2015 Edition". OH, and another life changing event in 2016... a meet and greet with THEE JUSTIN BIEBER! My absolute God. I worship Biebs. However, dreams crushed again. It got cancelled. Another unfortunate event for the list. 😅

ANYWAY...

As I had decided Americamp would be too much for me to tackle in 2016 I made the decision to defer. Travelling away from my family on my own all seemed like a bit too much on top of moving house and university. Also I knew getting over my cancelled meet and
greet would take the entirety of the year - note the sarcasm. 😉
Another fact to mention, before applying, make sure you will be able to go for a whole three months. I worked out that by the time my exams finished and finally got to camp, I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the months travel after as I would have to come home early to move to uni, I didn't want to miss the first few weeks.

When I rang the team to explain the whole situation, Americamp were so understanding! They deferred my application so I could pick up where i left off when the applications opened for 2017. The only money you lose when you defer is the initial application money (I think it was about £45) but the £60 I paid in stage 2 will just carry over to 2017.

Now here I am impatiently watching all the Americampers jet off to the states, whilst I'm sat here revising like crazy, with 0 social life. Jealous is not the word. Thankfully, I have been speaking with a girl who also has VIP this year, and we are both getting stupidly excited already for Summer 2017.

OKAY, so that was just a background about my initial application, in my next post, I will explain the whole application process. 😘😘

  1. Great blog post! Loving my mention ☺

I get it if you don't want to talk about it, but were you actually on the beach in Tunisia?

    1. Hahah Gotta mention my Americamp buddie❤️ And I wasn't directly on the beach - thank god! We was in the hotel next to the beach, literally I could see the imperial from my window, I'll have to show you a picture how close it was! but we heard all the bombs and had to hide in our bathroom! It was awful! There's also a cover up as there was more than 1 gun men, each targeted the 4 hotels in the area (including ours) I don't mind speaking about it😊X

    2. Coincidence right here: I was supposed to be going to the hotel next to the hotel that was shot at (which I presume was where you were) about 2 weeks after the shooting! That is completely crazy that we were supposed to be at the same hotel (or at least the same area). The bit about the cover up makes it more scary as I could have been at one of the 4 targeted hotels.

    3. No way! I went to Soviva Resort, it was literally behind the imperial! That's so crazy!! Yeah it was so strange! When we watched all the news stories when we came home, nothing added up right, as the main gun man everyone hears about got killed, then about an hour later, there was still a police helicopter out looking for the others, one was shot coming into our hotel and one got caught on the way to the airport, for some reason, we saw the picture of the guy getting caught on the way to the airport, and it was also on the news instantly in the UK as someone was keeping us also updated on BBC news, suddenly, all coverage of that part was taken off! Weird!

    4. I'm not sure if that was the hotel that we were supposed to be going to or not but either way it is the same area so still quite weird that we have now connected through AmeriCamp!

Why would they bother to cover it up though is what I don't understand...

    5. Isn't it just! How weird is this! And yeah I don't quite know, it's all been very strange! But there was some knowledge that it was going to happen, there was already a police horse on the beach before it broke out, it was all really strange x

  2. The fact that there was a police horse could have just been chance... still weird though!
